CouchPotato 3.0 Review
CouchPotato 3.0 was released the week of August 24 2015. The biggest change is an improved GUI that makes the program easier to navigate.
You can download CouchPotato at CouchPota.to for free.
Installing the program on Windows and OSX is easy. If you prefer, you can download the source code and install from that.
Linux instructions are available on the site linked above.
Using the Program
CouchPotato runs from your browser window. There’s a gear icon that allows you to access the program’s settings.
CouchPotato can be set up to automatically download content. You can download over USENET or Bittorrent.
You can be more selective in your searches by filtering for video quality, keywords and other criteria.
CouchPotato can interface with SABnzbd with an API key. It can also work with NZB sites using their API keys.
Once you get CouchPotato set up, you can let it automatically find the content you’re after, and you can be very specific. It runs behind the scenes. If the video you’re searching for isn’t available when you enter it into CouchPotato, the program will keep searching for it and, when it finds it, it takes care of the download for you.
To use CouchPotato, you’ll need access to a torrent site or a USENET provider, or both.
If you’re using torrents, remember that you’ll want to use a VPN service to hide your IP.
CouchPotato runs on Python. You might have to download additional files for CouchPotato to run. Downloading the installer is the easiest way to go.
CouchPotato uses your downloading software to get the content when it finds it. If you connect it to SABnzbd, for instance, CouchPotato will send the download to that program once it finds the file you want.
CouchPotato isn’t particularly technically demanding to use, which makes it even more appealing. For automatic downloading, it’s very convenient once you get used to it.
CouchPotato has a big following and is regularly updated and improved. It lets you get the most out of a USENET subscription by eliminating the need for you to search for binaries over and over again when they haven’t been released yet.
CouchPotato can also download from torrents, which makes it more versatile and, in all likelihood, gives it much broader appeal. Using torrents, however, does come with risks, so be sure to hide your IP address with a VPN or by some other means.
